Day 2: Santa Cruz to King City
By Daddy
Santa Cruz to King City— Monday was a hard, wet day for the 2,200 bikers on the 2nd day of the grueling 545 mile, 7 day AIDS/LifeCycle ride to benefit the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation
At 107 miles, Day Two's route is the longest of the week, and for many cyclists was their first century ride. The day began in Santa Cruz and wound through artichoke and strawberry fields of the fertile Salinas Valley. However heavy rain made the morning impossible for some.
"Some things we can't control. Thanks to Mother Nature, heavy rain delayed some riders while they were at today's lunch stop in Salinas or on their way to it. Because of the delay, we're safely transporting them to camp at King City where hot showers and meals are waiting."
A Church near Rest Stop 2 opened their doors to the wet riders and mylar blankets are available to all to help them keep warm.
Riders that had made it to the lunch stop before the downpour started were allowed to continue their ride, however for safety's sake the rest were transported by bus.
